Year 5 Philosophy Cup

Our primary school debating competitions are probably the most fun and chaotic events we offer! Each term, we welcome roughly 200 students from local primary schools to compete. This summer, we are changing the format slightly to have a stronger focus on ethics and philsophy, with teams having to argue multiple perspectives, not just for or against.

This competition is for Year 5 pupils. No experience is required

  • July 4th, 3.45-7pm.
  • Teams of four take part in two or three ‘ethical discussions’ modelled on Oxford University’s ‘Philosophon’ and St Andrew’s University’s ‘Ethics Cup.’
  • Teams present their thoughts on an ethical issue given to them on the day.
  • Judges reward depth of thought, the ability to consider different perspectives and clear and engaging presentation style.
  • Students are ‘case’ or ‘ethical dillema’ 15 minutes before the discussion starts and must prepare in their team, with no internet access or teacher help
  • Debates are adjudicated by South Hampstead High School’s debaters and visiting school teachers.
  • The location is South Hampstead High School, 3 Maresfield Gardens, London, NW3 5SS.

Thank you for an excellent event. I particularly liked the South Hampstead girls giving the feedback and managing the judging. All our children thoroughly enjoyed all elements and left very inspired.
