Year 5 Philosophy Cup

Our primary school debating competitions are probably the most fun and chaotic events we offer! Each term, we welcome roughly 200 students from local (and sometimes not so local) primary schools to compete and be crowned the champions of oracy!

Sign up now!

This competition is for Year 5 pupils. No experience is required

  • July 3rd, 3.30pm-7pm.
  • Teams of four take part in three rounds.
  • For each round, teams get two slots to speak for up to three minutes, then answer questions from the judges.
  • Judges reward the teams who carefully consider different perspectives on the case, present them clearly and answer questions well.
  • Students are given the cases (ethically dilemmas or philosophical situations, about half an A4 page in length) 15 minutes before the rounds start and must prepare in their team, with no internet access or teacher help
  • Debates are adjudicated by South Hampstead High School’s debaters and visiting school teachers.
  • The location is South Hampstead High School, 3 Maresfield Gardens, London, NW3 5SS.
  • For more information on the format, read our explainer: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Nn5KTTUiWw4UKDxUioTgEX5FW5RrZOni/edit
  • The resources ‘A little bit of ethics’ and ‘Ethical Dilemmas Expansion Pack’ both have example cases for this format.

Debate Hub would like to acknowledge this competition was inspired in part by the St.Andrew’s ‘Ethics Cup’ which produces exceptional resources for senior school philosophy.

Thank you for an excellent event. I particularly liked the South Hampstead girls giving the feedback and managing the judging. All our children thoroughly enjoyed all elements and left very inspired.
